Meet the Godess of O

Organizing is my passion - I've been doing it all my life. I think that may be true of many of my professional organizer colleagues - I know it's definately true about me. I was always the child held up as an example by my friends mothers as the one they would like their little girl to emulate. This didn't really cause a problem for me because my friends seemed to agree with the wisdom of their mom's desires. Also I was pretty affable and I actually seemed to enjoy cleaning up all of our toys after play time.

As time went on, I developed a minimalist philosphy which manifested itself by not purchasing "things" I didn't need or saving (and thus having to store) items that had outlived their usefulness. I taught myself certain tricks that helped to weed out the extraneous in my life and found I could simplify my world considerably by actually owning less.  I called it "creating breathing room" and so it was.

My dad was a nature lover so early on I adopted an environmentally friendly policy ( it was called conservation in those days). Lights were always swtiched off when leaving a room, I started to use only cloth napkins, I refused to use paper goods and disposables, I reused my paper bags until they screamed for mercy or requested "no bag, please" when I purchased just one or two items. The store clerks would look at me with astonishment and often said, "oh no, you have to take a bag". That was then.

Soon I discovered that not everyone shared my outlook. Also not everyone had the ability to be organized and clutter free. Could it be?  Friends started asking me to help them organize their stuff. What was second nature for me was actually a chore to them. It often took a lot of pyshcology (mine) and soul searching (theirs) to get them to part with their possessions. But over time we would get the job done and viola! It's amazing how often people are surprised that they can live happily with less.

This all led to my aha moment when I realized that I could actually turn my talents into a business and thus (drumroll) - Super Organizing Solutions was born.

I invite all you kind readers to check out my website: www:OrganizingBySOS.com . With this blog I also hope to inform, instruct and help some of you gain a little insight into the world of simplification, minimalism and the positive power of organization.

Have an organized day.

It's been awhile but a lot has happened. All of a sudden business has really picked up and I wonder if it's a sign of the improving economy or just that  people are spending more time at home and realizing they want their personal environment to be a more comfortable, nurturing, peaceful place.

What's interesting to me is the predictablility of behaviors each of my clients exhibit as they go through the organizing process. Sifting through clutter is a personal journey. Maybe it's part of the "therapy" to lovingly describe each object before it goes out the door. So often I hear, "oh I got this from my (fill in the blank) when we (fill in the blank)". But you know it has by now outlived its usefulness and the nostalgia value of an object from X number of years ago has been replaced by a new object of similar inconsequence. My thinking has always been, if the object is so precious why is it sitting neglected, in a moldy cardboard box in the garage or attic and hasn't seen the light of day in too many years. Are your memories any less fresh or meaningful unless they have a physical object attached to them?

Remember every object you bring into your home should have either intrinsic value, beauty, or function. If it doesn't, what's the point?

Have an organized day!
